Precision Oncology

The completion of the Human Genome Project has revolutionized both cancer research and cancer treatment, and instantly catapulted cancer research forward into the 21st century. From the very beginning, the Netherlands Cancer Institute has been in the very forefront of biomarker-guided precision oncology.

It is our mission to optimize precision diagnostics and treatment, to ultimately make this treatment type available to the majority of patients. We do this by way of close collaborations between the lab, the clinic and the pharmacy, investments in new technologies and research models ranging from AI to organoids, innovative clinical trials, and international collaboration.

What we investigate

Which treatment combinations are most effective in which cancer patients?

How can we best treat patients with drug resistant cancers?

How can we measure and predict whether a cancer treatment is effective as early as possible?
If you do what you did, you get what you got. That’s why we aim to develop disruptive new treatment options to improve the lives of cancer patients.

Innovations in precision oncology research
A personalized treatment for every cancer patient, that is the premise of precision oncology. In this video, research group leader Wilbert Zwart, physician-researcher Sofie Wilgenhof, researcher Matheus Dos Santos Dias, and physician-researcher Joris van de Haar take you along on their search for precision oncology.
