Prof dr. Sanne Schagen is group leader and head of the Division of the Psychosocial Research and Epidemiology at The Netherlands Cancer Institute and a staff member of Department Psychology at the University of Amsterdam. Alongside her scientific activities, she is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute for one day per week.

Her lines of research focus on:
1. The identification of cancer patients at risk for cognitive decline
2. Understanding the mechanisms underlying cognitive decline
3. The development, testing and implementation of interventions to preserve or enhance cognitive function.

Her studies are diverse in nature and range from neuropsychological assessments, brain imaging, experimental animal studies, to studies about symptom perception, expression and coping.

She has been successful in obtaining uninterrupted funding for her research as a PI and co-PI. This includes the highest prize awarded for research in Oncology in the Netherlands, the Queen Wilhelmina Research Prize. She has a solid track record in publications in clinical journals and journals in her own field of neuropsychology. She is co-founder founder and steering committee member of the International Cognition and Cancer Task Force, and co-founder of the Special Interest Oncology Group of the International Neuropsychological Society. Outside oncology, she is also embedded in the broader field of neuropsychology. She is the chair of the Dutch Neuropsychological Society, secretary of the Dutch Convent of Professors in Neuropsychology, and she serves on the board of governors of the International Neuropsychological Society.
