In general, a biobank is a collection of biomaterials and data from patients and/or healthy volunteers that can be used for scientific research.

At the NKI, we support researchers with reliable, high-quality biomaterials for scientific research. Our biobank is specifically designed to collect, store, and manage human biomaterials safely, efficiently, and responsibly. We adhere to current laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines, ensuring that quality and care are always paramount. The NKI Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews the establishment (and use) of all new biobanks.

We help researchers set up their biobank, providing advice on logistics, standardization, ethics, data management, and costs. Our experts assist in preparing processing protocols. Once biomaterials are collected and stored, we remain involved in database management and processing material requests. Biomaterials can be tissue (fresh, frozen & FFPE), whole blood, cells, serum, plasma, liquor, urine, feces or molecular derivatives such as gDNA, RNA, ctDNA, and protein.
