Faculty

Our faculty is made up of around 55 (junior) group leaders working in basic and translational research, and around 15 clinicians with substantial research activities. Each group leader has his/her own research program and enjoys a large degree of freedom to plan their own research. Our faculty has a very limited teaching obligation.

All group leaders contribute to institute-wide activities such as our seminar committee, user committees of research facilities, and PhD committees.

Frequently asked questions

How should I apply for a faculty position?
You can apply in response to a vacancy that we post, or directly by sending your research plan and CV to the Director of Research.

What can the NKI offer a group leader?
The NKI offers an exciting research environment that motivates people to do impactful research. NKI finances the salary costs for the group leaders and those of one additional position per group leader. Each group leader also receives a budget for research consumables, travel and publications. Junior group leaders receive additional support to help them get started on their research. (Senior) group leaders receive a competitive welcome package.

How often does the NKI have vacancies for group leaders?
We aim to recruit one junior group leader per year. We usually open a vacancy at the end of the year, and advertise every vacancy on our website and via other channels for at least 2 months. If you are interested in joining our staff, please contact the Director of Research to inquire about upcoming vacancies.

What can the NKI offer a junior group leader?
A junior group leader is appointed for a period of 5 years, at the end of which an evaluation takes place to decide on a potential permanent position. A junior group leader will receive a competitive salary and welcome package, allowing him/her to build an independent research group.
