CEM-BPE

Quantitative background parenchymal enhancement, measured on contrast-enhanced mammogram, as a novel marker of breast cancer risk

(Funder: US NCI, project number R37 CA 1284134).

The purpose of this project is to develop an automated measure of background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) from contrast-enhanced mammogram (CEM). CEM is an emerging breast screening modality that improves detection of breast cancer relative to conventional mammogram, particularly for women with dense breasts. BPE is a new marker of breast cancer risk (see Watt et al. Radiology 2023). This project will translate BPE to CEM, which is less costly and more accessible to individuals at risk of breast cancer. With an automated measure of BPE on CEM, we will assess the degree to which this new marker predicts the risk of breast cancer.
