Radionuclides Center

Radionuclides centre

The Radionuclides center (RNC) is the facility for researchers who want to perform their radioactive experiments at the NKI. This center has several containment levels (B, C and D-level) in which a range of experiments can be performed.

Also, the department provides training courses for people whose work entails the use of radioactive material. The staff of the RNC provides help and advice on various aspects of radioactivity.

Equipment & Technologies

The RNC consists of a complex of well equipped labs for different types of experiments:

  • Tissue culture labs on B- and C-level

Equipped with fume hood, biohazard hood and CO2-incubator for cell labelling experiments like:

  • 51Chromium release assay
  • 35S- labelled compounds for incorporation in cells and immune precipitation
  • 3H-, 14C-labeled compounds for uptake.
  • 32P-Laboratory

Specially equipped with Perspex shields to work with this nuclide in experiments like:

  • kinase assays
  • DNA-labeling
  • Northern and Southern blotting.
HPLC-lab: advanced HPLC configuration with UV-detector and on-line radioactivity detector.

Radiation detectors or counters:
Liquid Scintillation Counter for measuring beta-radiation from nuclides like 3H-, 14C-, 35S- and 32P.
Gamma counter for measuring nuclides like 99mTc, 125I, 18F.
a Top Counter for measuring microtiter plates for radioactivity or luminescence.
A Phosphor Imager for developing phosphor imaging screens and detection of fluorescence in gels.

Also under the supervision of the RNC: Gamma cell 40 irradiation machine for irradiating cells.
