Tom van Wezel works as a clinical molecular biologist in pathology (KMBP) at the Pathology Department of the Netherlands Cancer Institute. In his role, he interprets abnormalities in tumor DNA. He also coordinates germline genetic testing, mapping out the genetic characteristics of tumors. The information from the tumor DNA can affect diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment choice. Molecular diagnostics is an essential component in modern medical care, and the field is currently experiencing rapid advancements in development. Van Wezel: “It’s amazing to be able to solve genetic puzzles every day in order to improve patient care.”
In his new role as professor, Van Wezel will focus on the further development and application of new techniques. He will also be working on reinforcing collaborations with external parties to further optimize the integration of molecular diagnostics in pathology.
