Thesis defense Li Li: New functions of junk DNA elucidated

08-01-2019

Only two per cent of our DNA contains genetic code for making proteins, which have all kinds of important functions in our body. The remainder was considered useless junk DNA for a long time. However, more and more studies show that this junk DNA has all sorts of biological functions. Also, parts of this DNA are associated with diseases like cancer. PhD student Li Li from the Netherlands Cancer Institute discovered several new DNA-elements that play a role in cancer cell division. On Wednesday he will defend his thesis. Good luck Li!
