PhD researcher Ieva Kurilova has analyzed the outcomes of patients treated with such interventional oncology procedures. Interventional oncology is a relatively new specialty that uses minimally invasive techniques under image-guidance (such as CT or ultrasound) to achieve precise tumor targeting for cancer in different organs in the body. In selected patients with metastatic colorectal cancer interventional oncology therapies can help achieve long-term disease control and improved survival. With thermal ablation, for example, physicians can use special electrodes through the skin to apply heat and destroy the tumor. Or they can use radioembolization, by injecting very small radioactive particles in the tumor vessels that irradiate the tumor cells internally and kill them. Ieva will defend her thesis on July 7th.
