Rene was among nine foreign scientists honored during the State Science and Technology Awards ceremony in Beijing, in the presence of President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang.
He received the award in recognition of the longstanding collaboration between his research group at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and scientists at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Renji Hospital. This partnership has already led to two experimental therapies for liver cancer that have shown promising results in early clinical trials.
The collaboration is also built on the active exchange of scientific talent. Over the past ten years, six young researchers from Shanghai have trained in the Bernards lab at the NKI. Two of them have since established successful research groups in Shanghai and continue to collaborate with René on the development of new cancer therapies.
