This project builds on earlier findings from the international Cancer Grand Challenge PRECISION consortium, in which researchers spent seven years studying which cases of DCIS require treatment. In that project, researchers discovered five biomarkers that may help predict whether DCIS will develop into invasive breast cancer.
“In this Proof of Concept project, we will explore the best way to develop and implement a reliable and affordable risk prediction model,” says Esther Lips. “Together with the groundwork from PRECISION, and results from the LORD trial (also funded by KWF Dutch Cancer Society), this will bring us closer to personalized treatment for DCIS: avoiding unnecessary surgery while maintaining quality of life for women.”
