How was the ranking established?
The Newsweek ranking is based on reputation. Its foundation is an online survey conducted across 40,000 medical specialists from 20 countries, invited by the research bureau. Respondents were asked which clinics they would recommend (excluding their own) in their own field as well as one other field, and to provide a top 5. Based on these rankings a score was calculated, which was then provided to an international expert board with six members. Their feedback was included in the final rankings.
Compliment for the director of care and care development
Medical director Jacqueline Stouthard is proud of this global recognition: "It is quite an accomplishment for a relatively small institute like the Netherlands Cancer Institute to be included in this global list. It means recognition for our expertise and skill. A tremendous compliment for everybody working in direct patient care."

Other Dutch centers
Three other oncology centers were included in the rankings: Erasmus MC Cancer Institute (119), Amsterdam UMC, oncology (194), and the Cancer Center Amsterdam of VUmc (203). Number one was taken by the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
