"I researched potential ways to improve the population screening program for colorectal cancer. People between the ages of 55 and 75 are currently invited to participate in this screening program once every two years. A stool test can detect blood, which may indicate the presence of polyps or colorectal cancer. The current test performs well but is far from perfect. Over the recent years, we have been developing the multitargetFIT at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, an extension of the current test. Our results show that our new test can detect polyps and colorectal cancer more accurately than the current one. This allows us to prevent colorectal cancer and ensure that fewer people die as a result of the condition.
I was already involved in laboratory research before starting my PhD research, but my lab work felt far removed from clinical practice. I wanted to focus on translating fundamental research into clinical applications. That’s why I was so happy when Gerrit Meijer and Manon Spaander gave me the opportunity to work on this challenging project. I’m fascinated by the fact that our research could potentially impact the health of millions of people across the globe.
I was able to present our findings at a conference of the World Endoscopy Organization in Copenhagen, in the presence of global experts in colorectal cancer screening. That was an incredible experience. Our study was published in the renowned scientific journal Lancet Oncology, which emphasizes the significance of our results.
Although I am currently specializing as a gastroenterologist, I want to continue combining my work in the clinic with scientific research. I also really love being able to teach. I enjoy giving lectures and mentoring medical interns and students."
Pieter Wisse successfully defended his thesis cum laude on April 8.
