Research & Clinic

Fostering synergy for maximizing patient impact

The NKI is a comprehensive cancer center that has a research institute and a dedicated cancer hospital under one roof. Over the decades, we have learned that close collaboration between our fundamental, translational, and clinical researchers is the surest and fastest way to translate new scientific insights into patient impact. This is why we keep promoting and facilitating synergy between our labs, our clinic and our pharmacy.

Our initiatives to promote excellent translational research have been recognized by the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, when they designated us ‘Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence in Translational Research’ in 2017.

What do we do to foster collaboration between lab and clinic?

  • In our ‘twinning program’, a basic researcher and a clinician work closely together on a day-to-day basis.
  • A growing number of our clinicians also lead their own research group.
  • Our Translational Research Board, consisting of basic, translational and clinical researchers, advises the Board of Directors on issues concerning the integration of research activities, infrastructure, and the strengthening of translational research themes.
  • The NKI has a clinical introduction program for basic scientists.
  • We have invested in building a state-of-the art infrastructure, e.g. our Clinical Research Unit, our Biobank and molecular pathology services.
  • We actively promote national and international collaboration in translational research.
I strongly believe that as an institution we have a social responsibility to strengthen the ties between lab and clinic.
