Research & Clinic

Connecting discovery and care to accelerate patient impact

At the Netherlands Cancer Institute, research and care are closely connected. As a comprehensive cancer center with a research institute and a dedicated cancer hospital under one roof, we bring together fundamental, translational and clinical research to help scientific insights move faster towards better care for patients.

What makes this approach powerful is the close collaboration between our labs, clinic and pharmacy. By strengthening these connections, we create an environment in which ideas, expertise and clinical questions continuously inform one another.

How we foster collaboration between lab and clinic

  • In our twinning program, a basic researcher and a clinician work closely together on a day-to-day basis.
  • A growing number of our clinicians also lead their own research group.
  • Our Translational Research Board advises the Board of Directors on the integration of research activities, infrastructure and translational research themes.
  • The NKI has a clinical introduction program for basic scientists.
  • We invest in infrastructure that supports translation, including our Clinical Research Unit, Biobank and molecular pathology services.
  • We actively promote national and international collaboration in translational research.
I strongly believe that as an institution we have a social responsibility to strengthen the ties between lab and clinic.
