Postdoc committee

Welcome to the website of the NKI postdoc committee!

The postdoc committee represents the interests of all postdoctoral fellows working at the NKI. Our main goals are to evaluate and improve the environment and education for NKI postdocs. In 2011, twelve NKI postdocs initiated the 'NKI PhD Student and Postdoc Survey' in order to assess issues important to postdocs and PhD students working at the NKI. The current postdoc committee, postdoc@NKI, is one of the outcomes of this survey. The survey provided us with great insight into aspects in need of improvement and since its inception, the committee has been busy addressing these, as well as new points to enhance the NKI postdoc experience.

Examples of what we do can be found under the links below and include, but are definitely not limited to, providing practical support for current and new postdocs, organizing fun and educational activities as well as dealing with career and safety issues.

Postdoc Dean

Fred van Leeuwen:

"Postdocs fulfil a key role in the success of the research in our institute. As Dean for Postdoc Affairs, I work with the NKI postdoc committee and Human Resources to enable our postdocs to make the most out of their careers. We have just initiated and are further developing a training program to stimulate postdocs to take charge of their careers and develop themselves as highly skilled, innovative and independent researchers."

Postdoc training program

In collaboration with postdocs@NKI, the Postdoc Dean and Human Resources have developed an in-house Postdoc Training Program. The goals of the program are to provide postdocs with the tools to take charge of their professional and personal development at the NKI, to ensure they make the most of their time here and to prepare them for the next step(s) in their career.

The initial phase of the program was officially launched at a Kick-off Event on the 27th of October 2014. Since then, the program has evolved into two streams - an introductory Basic program for postdocs in their first year at the NKI, and an Advanced program catering to postdocs in their second and subsequent years. The mandatory Basic program aims to give all postdocs a grounding in a variety of career and personal development topics. In contrast, the optional Advanced program modules offer a selection of workshops to choose from every year, which allow postdocs to dig deeper into areas that are of most interest to their own career development.

Events and initiatives

Career events

Once a year, we organise an Alumni Career Evening to which we invite former NKI postdocs who have since pursued interesting careers in and outside of academia. At this event, alumni give a short informal presentation about their career path to date and share experiences about their professional life. Following the presentations, we hold a mixer where the audience can interact with the speakers in a relaxed atmosphere.

In addition to this, we often host career talks from past colleagues working internationally and not able to join the yearly event.
More recently, we have also organised an event focusing specifically on providing insight into career opportunities within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

We aim for these events to be an opportunity for current postdocs to broaden their career outlook and networks.

Seminars and workshops

We regularly organize a variety of informative seminars and workshops for the NKI postdoc community. In the recent past, these have included seminars on funding sources and the grant review processes, communicating with the media, referencing software options as well as workshops on grant writing and technology transfer.

Newsletters

To keep the postdoc community well informed on any developments relevant to their work at the NKI, as well as the activities that we organize, we produce a monthly email newsletter.
