Scientific Annual Report 2021


During the COVID pandemic, we have experienced the power of fundamental science and profited from years of immunological research. In our daily lives, we have learned to adapt and be even more flexible and creative than before. However, the harsh truth is that 2021 has also been yet another challenging year, which has been particularly tough on our young researchers, who have come from many countries in the world to work in the Netherlands Cancer Institute as a PhD student or a Postdoc. Normally, this means getting a great amount of work done, but also having a great time, spent with a large group of people from different backgrounds both scientifically and culturally. During the past two years, such stimulating interactions have been under great pressure, and a survey held amongst our PhD students revealed that they have experienced substantial stress. This merits our closest attention.
