The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) recognised fifty-nine leading life scientists from Europe and around the world for their proven excellence in research. Daniel Peeper and Bas van Steensel from the Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL) are two of them. Membership is a life-long honour with new members nominated and elected annually by existing members.
Both Prof. Daniel Peeper and Dr. Bas van Steensel are staff member at the NKI-AVL, at the division of Molecular Genetics and division of Gene Regulation respectively. Peeper’s laboratory focuses on resolving cancer cell networks and identifying cancer drug targets. He uses a variety of molecular biological approaches, including genome-wide genetic screens in mammalian cells. Van Steensel is interested in how chromatin proteins can control gene expression programs. His research group designs and applies novel whole-genome technologies and analytical tools to study the interactions of regulatory proteins with their target genes.
EMBO membership
Fifty-one of the researchers, distinguished as EMBO Members, are from thirteen European countries while eight equally respected scientists come from Australia, Singapore and the US and join as Associate Members. The newly elected EMBO Members are all active researchers and bring the current membership total to 1360. EMBO Members represent a high-profile cross section of researchers from all fields of molecular life sciences ranging from developmental biology, genomics, molecular medicine, neuroscience and plant biology to systems biology. Forty-eight scientists from the EMBO membership have received the Nobel Prize, many others are recipients of prestigious international awards.
