The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences is constantly seeking ways to involve young scientists in its work. With that aim in mind, it set up 'The Young Academy' (DJA, De Jonge Akademie) in 2005. DJA will welcome promising young scientists who obtained their doctorate fewer than ten years ago, have already made their mark in the research world and have a wide-ranging interest in science.

The Young Academy has selected NKI-AVL scientist Reuven Agami and nine other scientists as new members: researchers from a variety of disciplines with strong scientific credentials who have all obtained their doctorates within the past ten years. The Academy wishes to use The Young Academy to bring young researchers into contact with colleagues in other disciplines.
The Young Academy organises interdisciplinary scientific conferences and public activities and expresses its opinion on various social and political themes, either upon request or at its own discretion.

Each year a committee that includes members of The Young Academy and the Royal Netherlands Academy select 10 new Young Academy members, based on recommendations from the research community. New members are selected for their scientific excellence, interdisciplinary approach and wide-ranging interest in science. Members leave The Young Academy after five years.
