Scientific literature in oncology and cancer research
The Central Cancer Library (Centrale Kanker Bibliotheek = CKB) provides information services supporting research, medical and nursing staff in providing access to the biomedical and oncology literature. The literature (both journals and books, nowadays e-journals and e-books) are necessary sources for keeping up with professional and scientific developments.
The library organizes training courses in information management, e.g. PubMed search & retrieval, bibliographic management with Reference Manager or EndNote.
National & international library network
The CKB is part of the national and international library infrastructure and networks. On a national level the CKB is particpating in the shared cataloguing system of the Dutch Hospital Libraries (Centrale Catalogus Ziekenhuisbibliotheken = CCZ) and the national interlibrary loans system operated by OCLC. The CKB has accounts for direct services from the British Library (UK) and Subito (a library network in Germany). In case of publications not available in the Netherlands we can send out requests to our colleagues in the UK or Germany.
Extensive contacts exists with medical libraries all over Europe, Canada and the USA.
Bibliographic databases and collections of the CKB
The library collects books, dissertations, reports, journals both in print and electronic format (CD-ROM and online). An overview of acquisitions is published twice a year.
The library builds and maintains bibliographic databases of all publications of staff members (NKI-AVL publications). Annual bibliometric reports are produced on impact of these publications and citation figures.
The library web catalogue is available on the intranet, but all holdings are also registered for retrieval in the national shared catalogue (PiCarta) as part of the hospital libaries collection.
Journal holdings (both print and electronic) are registered in PubMed for easy referral to full text articles.
Patient information
The patient education and information centre is not part of the scientific library. The patient information desk is situated in the main entrance hall of the hospital.
