The Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital (NKI-AVL) is a world-class institute for cancer research and cancer care based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Its mission is to combat cancer through excellence in patient care and scientific research.
The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) at the NKI-AVL is charged with maximising the chances of turning the institute’s research efforts into novel products and services that will benefit cancer patients. It also supports the institute’s research and hospital staff by negotiating and managing clinical and pre-clinical research contracts.
The position:
The TTO at NKI-AVL is now seeking a highly motivated professional to serve as a Senior Technology Transfer Manager (full-time). You will report to the manager TTO and be responsible for:
1. Developing and maintaining strong relationships with faculty inventors and prospective inventors as well as key contacts in industry;
2. Taking the lead on technology commercialization including sourcing of inventions, technology evaluation, formulation of business cases and development strategies and protection of intellectual property;
3. Identifying and qualifying licensees; developing marketing plans and materials and contacting potential licensees, drafting business terms for license agreements and negotiating and executing license agreements;
4. Protection of the interests of the institute in contracting with (commercial) third parties, with an emphasis on IP and commercial terms and in close collaboration with the TTO legal counsel;
5. IP Management, including a portfolio of patents/patent applications and guarding contractual obligations of third parties towards the institute and of the institute towards others;
6. Education and training of research and support staff and mentoring of interns as needed.
Requirements:
Candidates should have a thorough understanding of technology evaluation and commercial product development and IP protection strategies. Highly important is the ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with research staff and corporate representatives to build a pipeline of disclosures and business opportunities. In particular, the TTO is seeking qualified candidates with experience with early-stage biomedical technology commercialization, including therapeutics, diagnostics, and medical devices. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in the biomedical or related technical field. A PhD degree is strongly preferred (professional experience and accomplishments may be considered instead of the advanced degree preference). Most preferably, the candidate has up-to-date knowledge of the cancer field.
Other required qualifications include:
- a minimum of three years relevant professional experience in business or academia involving development/commercialisation of life science technologies;
- the ability to work both independently and in a team situation, in a highly complex setting and under pressure;
- able and willing to take responsibility for commercial decisions and to independently represent the institute in contacts and negotiations with external organisations;
- strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in English;
- demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills and good decision-making and negotiating skills;
- strong working knowledge of contracting around intellectual property and of industry-standard licenses, including royalty rates and license structures;
- the ability to relate to and work with support staff.
Employment conditions:
Remuneration will be in line with the candidate’s knowledge and prior work experience and will be governed by the CAO Ziekenhuizen (Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals). The successful candidate will be permanently employed following a positive appraisal period.
