Junior Group Leader

Vacaturenummer 2010/076

The Netherlands Cancer Institute is an independent research institute located in the lively city of Amsterdam. The Netherlands Cancer Institute and the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital form an integrated cancer center, combining a research laboratory and a hospital in a single organization.

The Cancer Systems Biology Center (CSBC)

is a newly established center of excellence within the Netherlands Cancer Institute. The CSBC aims to develop a strategy to tackle the complexity of molecular networks that govern breast tumorigenesis. This strategy will be rooted in a computational modeling and experimental validation cycle spanning multiple levels of complexity including cell lines, mouse models and patients. The final goal is to deliver improved diagnostic tools to enable tailored cancer therapy.

The core of the center will be built around the computational modeling, high-throughput screening and mouse model groups. This core will closely interact with the high-throughput sequencing facility, pathology and the clinic. In total, 10 research groups will actively participate in this center. Within this center we are going to establish an independent computational modeling group, and to head this group we have created a position for a Junior Group Leader Computational modeling of signaling pathways.

The Netherlands Cancer Institute

invites excellent and ambitious scientists with expertise in computational systems biology (signaling pathway modeling, integrative bioinformatics) to apply for this position. The group leader will be provided the opportunity to start his/her own group within the CSBC and will work in close collaboration with the bioinformatics, high-throughput screening and mouse model groups. The successful candidate will play an important role in shaping the research and education with the center.

State-of-the-art facilities

The research groups at the NKI-AVL are supported by state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, most with dedicated support staff such as a genomics facility which provides various gene expression, copy number and sequencing platforms, a functional screening facility for RNAi and small-molecule libraries, excellent facilities for digital microscopy, flowcytometry, protein expression and purification. The Institute has a large mouse facility with special units for transgenesis, pathology and functional imaging and many more.

Inspiring international atmosphere Approximately

550 people work in the research laboratory and many of the clinicians are involved in research. Work discussions, lectures and seminars are in English and a large number of non-Dutch post-docs, students and staff members contribute to the stimulating and international atmosphere of the Institute.

Inviting conditions

We offer a stimulating and interactive research environment, free use of all state-of-the-art facilities and a competitive salary (including possibilities for additional tax-reduction). Junior group leaders will be offered a 5 year appointment. After 4 years they will be evaluated for a tenure position. They receive a starting fund to support their group (including their own salary if this is not supplied by external funding obtained by the group leader).

For further information
