Project information:

Sister chromatid cohesion mediated by the ring-shaped cohesin complex is essential for faithful chromosome segregation in mitosis and for high fidelity DNA damage repair through homologous recombination.
We offer a PhD student position on a project funded by the Dutch Cancer Society that consists of two parts. The first part will study the elusive mechanism by which sister chromatid cohesion is established in eukaryotic cells. This process takes place during S phase, but how cohesion establishment and DNA replication are coordinated is largely a mystery. The second part focuses on how and why cohesin is removed from chromosome arms in early mitosis of animal cells. This latter project in essence asks what causes human chromosomes to get their well-known X-shape. The project as a whole will be a mixture of genetics and imaging in mammalian cells, and also of genetics and biochemistry in budding yeast.
The project is supervised by Dr. Benjamin Rowland and Prof. Dr. René Medema, who will be moving to the NKI in October 2011. Ideally the project will start between October 2011 and January 2012.

Requirements:

We are looking for a motivated Postdoc with a passion for the cell cycle and chromosome biology. A background in molecular biology is required. Experience with microscopy, (yeast-) genetics and/or biochemistry will be appreciated. Please include your CV in your application Email to b.d.rowland@umcutrecht.nl.

Employment conditions:

The temporary employment will be for a period up to three years. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals and depends on previous experience.
