Career & Training

The Netherlands Cancer Institute-Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL) is an integrated cancer institute, combining a research laboratory and hospital under one roof in a single, independent organization. The laboratory covers all major areas of basic molecular biology and clinical research, with special emphasis on mouse tumor models, mouse (reverse) genetics, cancer cell biology and translational research requiring close collaboration between clinical and basic scientists. The NKI-AVL research program is subdivided among thirteen divisions: Cell Biology, Molecular Carcinogenesis, Biology, Cellular Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Tumor Biology, Molecular Genetics, Experimental Therapy, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Diagnostic Oncology, Radiotherapy and Psychosocial Research and Epidemiology.

Opportunity

During the year we have positions open for graduate-students, post-docs and technicians in most research divisions. On a regular base we also seek assistant professors. These AvL-fellows are given the opportunity to start their own group building on their own proven excellence as a post-doc and the facilities offered by the institute, including financial support in the initial phase to appoint personnel. Also, for masters students and trainees we offer rotation projects in the lab.

International atmosphere

Approximately 500 people work in the research laboratory. Research discussions, lectures and seminars in English and a large number of non-Dutch post-docs, students and staff members contribute to the stimulating and international atmosphere of the Institute.

State of the art

The research divisions within the NKI-AVL are supported by state of the art equipment, usually with dedicated support staff. The institute has a large animal facility with a special unit for the generation of transgenic mice, an animal histology and pathology department and facilities for digital and electron microscopy, flow cytometry, high-throughput screening, sequencing and microarray synthesis and analysis.

Stimulating and interactive

We offer a stimulating and interactive research environment, state of the art facilities, a competitive salary (including possibilities for additional tax-reduction for non-Dutch employees) and housing facilities in the vicinity of the Institute. Researchers at the NKI-AVL have no teaching obligations.
